Selective Eating Among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Selective eating is common among children with special needs and children with autism spectrum in particular. Keith will discuss possible reasons for selective eating. He will also discuss selective eating as a spectrum problem and why the failure to conceptualize selective eating in this manner can be problematic. He will also talk about the role of repeated exposure in the development of taste preferences and how a range of interventions can incorporate repeated exposure to increase diet variety. 

Learning Objectives

  1. Learners will be able to discuss the role of repeated taste exposure in the development of taste preferences. 
  2. Learners will be able to discuss the incorporation of fading into an intervention for increasing diet variety.
  3. Learners will be able to discuss the importance of motivating operations for feeding interventions. 
     

About the Speakers

Keith Williams1

Keith Williams, Ph.D, BCBA

has over 35 years of experience working with children with feeding problems. He has been the Director of the Feeding Program at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center for 25 years and is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Penn State College of Medicine. He has over 70 publications in peer reviewed journals, book chapters, and books. His latest book was Broccoli Boot Camp with Laura Seiverling.

Keith is a licensed psychologist and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. He is the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Association of Behavior Analysis (PennABA). He was a Fulbright Global Health Specialist to the National University of Ireland.

Dr. Bridget Taylor, Psy.D, BCBA-D 

is co-founder and CEO of Alpine Learning Group and is Senior Clinical Advisor for Rethink Behavioral Health. Dr. Taylor has specialized in the education of individuals with autism for over 30 years. She holds a Doctor of Psychology from Rutgers University, and received her Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education from Columbia University. She is a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst and a Licensed Psychologist. Dr. Taylor is past president of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and past Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. She currently serves on the board of the Society for the Experimental Analysis of Behavior (SEAB). Active in the autism research community, Dr. Taylor has published numerous peer-reviewed research articles and book chapters on innovative practices to improve the lives of individuals with autism. Her most recent work explores compassionate relationship-building with families in the provision of clinical services to individuals with autism. Dr. Taylor has been recognized by the Association for Applied Behavior Analysis International for her outstanding contributions and received ABAI’s Fellow designation.
